Bands such as R.E.M., the Replacements, the Posies, and Teenage Fanclub have cited Big Star as a primary influence.
In 1993 Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies backed Chilton and Jody Stephens for a reunion show.
Steven Ray was the band's original guitarist; Alex Chilton, former singer for the Box Tops, soon replaced him.
Tired of butting heads with Alex Chilton, Chris Bell left the band in 1972. He died in a car crash in 1978.
