Boston Symphony Orchestra
American orchestra founded in 1881 and first conducted by George Henschel (until 1884); its home is Symphony Hall (opened 1900). It provided players, administrators and teachers to other organizations in Boston. Summer Promenade Concerts (Boston Pops) were instituted in 1885. Its first recordings were made with Karl Muck in 1917. Under Serge Koussevitsky (1924-49) new works were introduced and commissioned and it took over the Berkshire (now Tanglewood) Musical Festival and founded (1940) a school for young musicians. Charles Munch (1949-62) instituted tours outside the USA. Erich Leinsdorf has been principal conductor (1962-9) and Seiji Ozawa (from 1973).
