Mastodon play a constantly shape-shifting hybrid of metalcore and sludge metal -- complex and heavy.
The quartet formed in Atlanta, Ga., in 2000, when hardcore bands This Is the Day and Lethargy fell apart.
Their 2004 album, "Leviathan," was named Record of the Year by metal 'zines "Kerrang!," "Terrorizer" and "Revolver."
"Leviathan" was a concept album based on Melville's "Moby Dick."
"Blood Mountain" features Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Josh Homme of QOTSA and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of the Mars Volta.
