Known for his songwriting, politics and five-string banjo playing, Seeger has been a key figure in folk music since the '30s. Pete Seeger's father was a musicologist, which may go a long way in explaining his son's interest in music. Peter Seeger learned to play the banjo -- his trademark instrument -- while in his teens. Seeger often took traditional folk songs, Spanish songs, and songs from African slaves and updated or rewrote the lyrics.
