Adele

In the 80s and 90s, we relied on Australian soaps to produce our new pop stars, with Stock, Aitken & Waterman working them from behind. But in the naughties, it seems it's all about the Brits School alumni. It's so far given us Kate Nash, Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and members of The Kooks and The Feeling; it's also given us Dane Bowers, but we don't like to talk about that. And now we have Adele, a soulful chanteuse who is officially the Next Big Thing, TM.
She hails from Tottenham (innit), but was dragged up in the not-so-leafy surrounds of Brixton. And by golly, the girl can write and sing like she's been in a time machine, sucking up all the ills of thirtysomethings everywhere, slamming on the reverse pedal and then spitting them out while strumming a guitar. She is, after all, only 19.
Her aptly named debut album "19" went straight to the top of the charts, a nation swooned and her soulful, jazzy voice is a gorgeous throwback to times gone by. Adele cites her influences as the likes of Etta James, Billy Bragg and Jeff Buckley, so she wasn't likely to come out with a Girls Aloud- style effort here.
So impressed were the Brit Awards judges with her efforts that they made an award up just for her - Adele is the recipient of the first ever Critics' Choice Brit Award, given to the act the critics deem most likely to make it in 2008. The future looks bright so far.
