Duffy

As retro-soul drips from every radio dial, the next piece of the puzzle slots into place in the shape of Aimee Ann Duffy - or Duffy to you and me. Huge lungs and blonde hair have brought her comparisons with Dusty Springfield, but that's probably because Duffy is a bit like Dusty if you squint enough, and some comparison-seekers are just plain lazy.
Thrown to the London wolves from Welsh valleys, it's generally considered lucky that Duffy landed in the arms of Rough Trade Records and then Bernard Butler, he of the shaggy hair and Suede guitar riffs. Together, Butler and Duffy spent a couple of years writing and honing her first album "Rockferry", Butler filling up Duffy's iPod with must-hear tunes, Duffy duly ingesting them and spitting out the songs in a husky, rich and soul-filled voice to keep her part of the bargain.
First single "Rockferry" was a cool, sophisticated offering with no chorus or 'instant hit' label attached; second single "Mercy" had both, single and album shot to No.1 the same weekend Wales won the grand slam and suddenly the whole world was waving inflatable Daffodils and leeks. Duffy succeeded in making Wales cool again.
What the second album brings remains to be seen, but right now, she's in the right place, right time, right voice.
